"Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?" - Captain Oveur, "Airplane"
You're enjoyment of this release might depend on whether you're a fan of gladiators or monster truck rallies – of which I am neither. I didn't even care for the popular Russell Crowe vehicle "Gladiator" and in truth the only film from this genre I’ve ever liked was "Spartacus"... and Planet Hulk is no Spartacus.
The story opens with a couple of the mightiest supers (including Iron Man and Dr. Strange) blasting Hulk off to a distant planet because he's too violent and dangerous to stay on Earth. His ship goes off-course and ends up in a hostile world where he becomes slave and savior to an oppressed people.
The first half is dull and routine: Sandwiched between a couple of gladiator battles, we are offered several back-stories for our various allies and foes. The need for this info was important - that it's presented in such a 'paint-by-numbers' manner defeats it. I never really felt for these folks or their plight. It's nice that the Hulk has some development of character and isn't only a smashing machine - and there are good moments in the second half – ala the interplay and battle between Hulk and the King's female bodyguard, which leads to an attack on a village. Still, it's too little, too late.
The animation is impressive and the voice work is very good. There are changes made from the source material, the biggest having the Silver Surfer replaced with Beta Ray Bill. Rights issues forced this replacement and while it's nice to see Bill in animated form (and he looks sharp), I had a "didn't I just see this?" moment. Watching Hulk pound Beta's face-in, in much the same manner he did to Thor in "Hulk Vs." was too much similarity in too short a span.
In closing: I'm tired of the Hulk, he's been a primary force in Marvel's last 3 direct to DVD releases and I wish they'd put him out to pasture for a while. I'm also tired of director Sam Liu. I felt his Thor segment in Hulk Vs was merely okay; I didn’t care a wit for Public Enemies and now this one, which I'd file under "M’eh". Hurt by a limp set-up and an ordinary finishing fight between Hulk and the King - "Planet Hulk" never got under my skin and rarely excited or interested me. It was something to watch, a time killer. Nothing more.
